Gianmarino Gianfrate

Gianmarino Gianfrate is a Trauma and Critical Care Fellow at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He has focused his medical career on trauma surgery, surgical critical care, and advanced resuscitation. He passed his general surgery boards in October 2025, becoming a board-certified general surgeon, and is scheduled to take his critical boards in September 2026. He is also an active member of the American College of Surgeons, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the Chest Wall Injury Society. In addition to treating trauma patients, Dr. Gianfrate is involved in trauma education, physician training, and quality improvement. He serves as an instructor through Advanced Trauma Life Support, Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma, Rural Trauma Team Development, Stop the Bleed, and multicenter pREBOA education programs. As Course Director for both ATLS and ASSET, he trains physicians and healthcare providers in trauma assessment, resuscitation, and operative trauma management. He also participates in a fellowship cohort centered on resuscitation science, innovation, simulation-based learning, and leadership development. Gianmarino Gianfrate, MD, is an invited educator for a multicenter collaborative, where he teaches residents, fellows, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams about the use of pREBOA and advanced resuscitation techniques. He has helped create educational materials used across participating institutions and has presented at academic centers and conferences. He was also invited to the SHIP Conference, where he presented data on venous thromboembolism and updates to practice guidelines. Before his fellowship, Gianmarino served as a Clinical Instructor of Surgery at Northeast Ohio Medical University, teaching medical students and surgical residents in clinical and operative settings. He has also held leadership roles in research, accreditation, physician wellness, and graduate medical education. These roles enabled him to contribute to quality improvement, research oversight, resident education, accreditation, and physician development. Gianfrate's honors include the Dr. Rashid Abdu “My Surgeon” award, the Surgical Research Resident Award for 2023, 2024, and 2025, Second Place in Oral Research Presentation in 2025, the Surgical Critical Care Resident Award in 2022, the Looking to the Future Scholarship Award in 2023, and the Glimmer of Hope Grant. His research focuses on trauma surgery, traumatic brain injury, critical care, hemorrhage management, trauma resuscitation, and surgical outcomes. Gianmarino Gianfrate completed his General Surgery Residency at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital from 2020 to 2025. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, earned a Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Science with the same distinction, and received a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh. Outside of medicine, he values leadership, mentorship, surgical education, cooking, winemaking, volunteering, and time with his wife and their two dogs.
